Sydney Scout Condemns Alaska National Guard Deployment to Assist ICE in Anchorage
Anchorage, Alaska - Anchorage Assembly candidate Sydney Scout forcefully opposes Governor Mike Dunleavy’s approval of Alaska National Guard members assisting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Anchorage.
“ICE is not welcome here. I oppose any collaboration between the State of Alaska and ICE,” Scout stated.
State officials have said that the Alaska National Guard’s current involvement is limited to administrative support. Scout warned that this is nonetheless a clear expansion of ICE capacity in Anchorage and represents an inappropriate use of National Guard resources at a moment when families across the city are facing higher costs and mounting economic pressures.
“Our National Guard exists to uphold the Constitution and serve the public, not to advance partisan agendas or supplement federal enforcement priorities,” she continued. “This sets a dangerous precedent. Once the Guard is embedded inside ICE operations, it becomes easier to justify further cooperation and harder to limit mission creep.”
Scout noted that communities across the United States have seen increasingly aggressive immigration enforcement and that civil rights organizations have documented the detention of U.S. citizens, as well as racial profiling and intimidation involving Black and Brown Americans. Anchorage residents deserve to live, work, and participate in their community without fear of being targeted, questioned, or misidentified because of their appearance or national origin.
“ICE was created under racist premises and is now being weaponized by the Trump Administration as a modern-day authoritarian enforcement arm targeting Black and Brown Americans,” she emphasized. “Its purpose is to instill fear and division in our communities, and it is wasting taxpayer dollars during a nationwide affordability crisis that is already deeply felt here in Anchorage. Any collaboration with ICE is unwelcome in our city.”
North Anchorage is home to some of the most diverse neighborhoods in the nation. Scout emphasized that public safety relies on strong relationships between residents and local institutions. Enforcement actions that isolate immigrant families or discourage community participation undermine that safety.
“I am running to represent all of our neighbors, regardless of immigration status, and I call on other leaders to speak up against measures that undermine safety and dignity in our community,” Scout concluded.
